Dr. Dan Wicklum

Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA)
Chief Executive
Dan Wickum has been Chief Executive of Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA) since its
inception in 2012. Under his leadership, COSIA has become a globally unique catalyst for collaboration
and innovation, with a billion-dollar portfolio of projects delivering on a mandate of accelerating
environmental performance in the oil sands.

Previously, Dan held executive positions with Environment Canada and Natural Resources Canada
including Director General of Wildlife and Landscape Science, Director General of Water Science and
Technology, and Director of Strategic Alliances. He was a Senior Policy Advisor to the Canadian Federal
Minister of Natural Resources and the Government House Leader, and was the founding Executive
Director of The Canadian Forest Innovation Council.

Dan is currently a member of the Canada West Foundation Natural Resource Centre Policy Council and
the Sustainable Development Technology Canada Member Council. He formerly served as a board
member for Emissions Reduction Alberta and the Canada Water Network, and was a member of the
Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers Responsible Canadian Energy Advisory Committee.
Dan has a BSc. in Biology from the University of Guelph and a MSc. in Aquatic Ecology from the
University of Calgary. He also has a Ph.D. in Aquatic Ecology from the University of Montana, where,
following graduate studies, he took a faculty position as a Research Assistant Professor.

Dan’s initial career was as a linebacker in the CFL, playing with both the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1988)
and the Calgary Stampeders (1989-91).
