Dr. Chantal Barriault is the Director of the Science Communication Graduate Program, the only one of its kind in Canada, offered jointly by Laurentian University and Science North. The program covers the theory underlying good communication as well as the practical challenges of effectively communicating science and the issues involving science in society. Courses include learning, design and rhetorical theory, the application of new social and traditional media, exhibit development, research methods and an eight-week work placement. Chantal spent most of her early career working at Science North, leading science communication projects like teacher training, education programmes, live theatre science shows and exhibit development. She also led visitor studies and learning impact research for Science North, its programs and its travelling exhibits. Most recently, her PhD research investigated the learning experience of visitors to zoos and aquaria to determine the impact of live animal exhibits on visitor learning. Chantal joined the faculty team at Laurentian University in 2013.
